It is always tricky to bat after a rain interval. All of a sudden the overs are reduced, the batsmen have to think of a target that is safe, and they have to change their style. Let's not forget that they have to play themselves in before they can go for the big hits. Not to take the credit away from Vettori and Kyle Mills, but India came out a little distracted after the first rain break, and lost two wickets for 21 runs in five overs before rain struck again

If McCullum plays, Neil Broom is most likely to sit out the game. Vettori said while he hadn't discussed it with coach Andy Moles, Broom's omission would be the logical step. India are the stronger team on paper. They haven't been subtle in talking up their ambitions to be No. 1 and, occupying the third spot in both Tests and ODIs, they have a shot at gaining higher ground. The next 50 days of India's tour of New Zealand will both test and answer India's aspirations to reach the top. The ratings and rankings and the wins in England, West Indies and Australia over the last few years will amount to little if India repeat a sad trend that started in 1981 - that of no Test or ODI series win in New Zealand
